Initially commissioned to work with a community undergoing change and regeneration, UHC created a public art response to the sudden closure of the Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder in Oldham and Rochdale in 2011.
Faced with the unusual situation of being asked to produce a lasting artwork for a community that had already been dispersed, UHC responded by inviting the few remaining elderly residents, ex-residents, campaigners, and ex-HMR workers to share in a free lavish spread, procured from local independent grocers and traders.
The artists created temporary positive action and a gift to the embattled community. The event was held in Oldham town centre and attracted over 200 local people.
A Private Function also marked the unveiling of a series of new works of art by UHC, created in collaboration with makers from the area. These included an egg carved from a local cobblestone and a free limited edition print distributed to all those attending.
The granite egg is now on permanent display at Gallery Oldham.
