The result of an ambitious collaboration between UHC’s illustrators, designers, researchers and furniture makers, The Thin Veneer of Democracy brings together multiple disciplines and interests, in a focused interrogation of the city’s relationship to its private regeneration partners.
With a 16ft long surface intricately inlaid in wood veneers and hand painted in Indian ink, the piece connects the names of the 101 institutions, officials, companies and private individuals who are invested in Manchester City Council’s Knowledge Capital project.
Conceived to act as UHC’s own boardroom table, The Thin Veneer of Democracy won the Art Gene open prize in 2007 and has resulted in numerous bespoke furniture commissions.
