UHC was artist in residence at Turton Tower, near Bolton, Lancashire during October 2011. This project was commissioned by Mid Pennine Arts for Contemporary Heritage, an ambitious contemporary art programme created in collaboration with historic sites across Lancashire.
During the residency UHC worked intensively to map the complex collection of buildings that make up the tower, some of which date from the 15th Century.
Through studying researcher’s records the artists were able to understand the complexity of the tower and its various wings and additions over time and then render the tower in Google’s SketchUp programme. To achieve accuracy, the external walls were painstakingly mapped with photographs taken on site.
The final piece was uploaded to Google’s 3D Warehouse and is Geotagged within Google Earth and is both an original artwork and a useful device for visitors and tower staff to understand the building and its architectural history.
A video showing renders of the SketchUp models created can be seen here.
